Number of trainees to be recruited

This hospital intends to recruit the following number of students into pre-registration training places.

  • 12 month ( 2 )

The Hospital / Training Premises

The County Hospital is an acute hospital within walking distance from the centre of the historic City of Hereford, in the Marches border country. It is part of the Wye Valley NHS Trust which also includes several community sites located around the county. A five year development plan has just been launched to ensure the Trust is able to continue to meet the health care needs of the population

The Pharmacy Department

The pharmacy department serves both the acute site, and the non acute, community sites in Herefordshire. The department is a purpose built facility incorporating dispensary, distribution, technical services, medicines information and clinical services. The department is busy, but retains a friendly feel with over 60 permanent staff. Recent developments include changes to our “front of house” service, introduction of specialist rheumatology and mental health pharmacists, and an interface pharmacist.

The Training Programme

Pre-registration trainee pharmacists rotate through all sections of the pharmacy to gain broad experience. Most days will include some time on the wards, (medical, surgical, orthopaedic) shadowing the pharmacist.  The year includes a one week cross sector placement in a City Centre pharmacy, a week with the CCG prescribing team and mental health pharmacist, and a First Aid at Work course, and attendance at the regionally based training days.
The programme encourages the development of professional responsibility throughout the year.

Other Information

The hospital is within walking distance of the train station (direct trains to Cardiff, Manchester, and Birmingham).  The surrounding countryside provides ample opportunity for outdoor pursuits and local literature, music and food festivals make for a busy social calendar.
