The Hospital / Training Premises

Walsall Healthcare NHS Trust provides local general hospital community services to around 260,000 patients in Walsall and the surrounding areas.

We are the only provider of NHS acute care in Walsall providing inpatients and outpatients at the Manor as well as a wide range of services in the community. Walsall Manor Hospital houses the full range of district general hospital services under one roof. A £170 million development was completed in 2010 which provides modern facilities for outpatients, daycase surgery with state of the art theatres, and paediatric wards.

Our Trust promises are: Welcomed, In safe Hands, Care for, Part of one team,  Appreciated and Supported to meet our high standards.

The Pharmacy Department

We are a small and friendly pharmacy service with the accent upon providing near patient pharmaceutical care with medication safety paramount. The service is provided from a modern, purpose-built premises.

We have close links with the University of Wolverhampton, Matthew Boulton College and Cauldon College through our emphasis on education and training of pharmacy staffs.

The mission of the Pharmacy department is ‘to deliver effective services and advice of the highest quality to meet the Trust’s present and future needs’.

The Training Programme

We provide pre-registration pharmacists with a structured rotational programme in all fundamental aspects of hospital pharmacy such as aseptic services, dispensary, distribution, medicines information and clinical pharmacy; the latter rotation includes comprehensive training in medicines reconciliation with allocation of your own ward to provide technical and clinical input.

You can expect to be seconded to placements with the NHS Clinical Commissioning Group and local community pharmacies.

The programme is designed to complement the pre-registration training syllabus requirements and provide ample opportunity to develop and demonstrate competence in the performance standards expected. Knowledge of specialties not covered within the rotation is addressed through attendance at regional study days which take place on a monthly basis.
