The Hospital / Training Premises

The main training base is Queen’s Hospital, Burton on Trent

There are 2 placements

1. Full time hospital training within Burton Hospitals NHS Trust

2. 2 split placements between Queen’s Hospital and Dean and Smedley Community Pharmacy. Applications for the joint post should also be made on Oriel.

The Pharmacy Department

Queen’s Hospital is a national pilot site for development of an integrated electronic patient record and as part of this part of this a paperless electronic prescribing system has been developed and has been fully operational over the whole hospital for a number of years.

Queen’s Hospital is a medium sized District General Hospital providing acute medical and surgical specialities, obstetric and paediatric services. We have an A&E, Acute Assessment Unit, ITU, CCU and NNU.

The Pharmacy department also has a sterile and non-sterile Manufacturing Unit with associated Quality Control

The Training Programme

The training programme involves experience in all aspects of Hospital Pharmacy with an emphasis on clinical experience although experience in manufacturing and chemotherapy is also available.

A month placement is community Pharmacy is provided

The pre-registration Pharmacist participates in all study days organised by the West Midlands regional training scheme

Other Information

Burton on Trent is a busy rural town, centered on the brewing industry, within easy reach of main Midland towns and cultural centres and the Derbyshire Peak District.

Social and Recreational

Burton is a vibrant, friendly social town with leisure facilities, a variety of high street shops, a small theatre, churches and there are many restaurants, pubs and clubs in town.

Transport Links

Burton-on-Trent has easy access to the A38 and the A50. The railway station is within walking distance of the hospital. Burton is on the main line railway between Derby and Birmingham.

There are regular bus links from outside the hospital into town and then to rural areas of South Derbyshire and Staffordshire or to cities of Derby and Lichfield.
